I love talking about how ceremonies can truly connect, inspire and transform us when we bring intention to the process from initial design to delivery. So I was excited to be a recent guest on the We Do Wedding Podcast to do just that!

The hosts, Cate Barry and Regina Burrus, are Connecticut-based wedding professionals who bring their vast industry experience and their big, beautiful hearts to their interviews.

This wasn’t a run-of-the-mill conversation between wedding professionals.

We did a deep dive into the importance of ceremony and what makes it meaningful.

We skipped the small talk and dove into:

  • The importance of ceremony and the benefits of reclaiming it in our lives;

  • The deeper meaning of weddings and how big moments in our life can be transformative;

  • Why ceremony outlines and rituals you’ve found on Google are not good starting points if you want to design a soulful wedding (or any other!) ceremony;

  • What questions you need to ask to get at the deeper meaning behind stories and inspire ceremony ideas;

  • Why it matters to honour and engage your guests in a meaningful way;

  • Examples of highly personalized, authentic ceremonies that I’ve crafted;

  • The #1 lesson I’ve learned as a celebrant — it’s my guiding principle throughout my work!

Although we talked a lot about weddings, we also delved into my personal story and how it informs my approach to crafting meaningful, authentic ceremonies across the life cycle : weddings, memorials, baby blessings, you name it!

There was a great flow to the conversation — an energy between the three of us. So much so that we continued talking for another hour after they stopped recording!

I was particularly touched by this takeaway that Cate had from our conversation:

I’m just really moved by the depth of the work that you’re describing and the possibility that’s available for people.

A wedding does not have to be cookie-cooker…a ceremony doesn’t have to be boring, it doesn’t have to be traditional. It can be incredibly meaningful and foster connection with guests.
